Saturday 22nd Feb (Day 1)
Day one of the Munster indoor U12 / 19 championships took place in Nenagh today and a good day was had by all. We had three winners and four bronze medallist along with a host of excellent performances given all something to look forward to in the future.
Our three gold medallist all came from our endurance squad with Sarah Lane winning her first Munster title in the U19 800m race. Our track international Ailbhe O'Neill then followed up with an emphatic win in the U18 800m and soon after Cian Hodgins won the U16 1500m getting away from teammate Tom Walshe in the last two laps with Tom eventually finishing 3rd. Continuing on with the endurance theme Sean Hayes ran a fine race for 3rd in the U17 1500m and his teammate Jamie Moloney close behind in 4th.
A relative novice at this level Jennifer O'Leary ran in the U14 800m and showed great maturity winning her heat and finishing 3rd overall just a second off 1st place. She is another athlete to watch out for in the future.
Ellen O'Dwyer jumped 4.85m in the U16 long jump to take the bronze medal and will look forward to her high jump tomorrow, Sunday.
Lewis Doyle ran for him the unfamiliar 400m and ran 56s to take the bronze medal with his teammate Pádraig Hassett close behind in 4th.
We had some other excellent non medal performances from sprinters Mairéad O'Brien U13, Lilly Duffy U13 and Hannah Larkin U12 in their 60m races and Emily O'Neill in her U12 600m and are all surely stars of the future.
Sunday 23rd Feb (Day 2)
So Sunday and day two of the Munster indoor U12 / 19 arrived and we had a slightly smaller contingent competing.
One of the first finals was in the middle distance events . We had 3 boys in the final of the U13 600m and in a very high quality race Ruairí Walshe finished 3rd after a big burn up on the final lap. Our cross country expert Kevin Finn finished 5th after winning his heat and Dylan Bergin was 8th after another good run. Dylan is a very versatile athlete and was also 8th in the 60m final.
Seán Hayes ran another excellent race and took his second bronze medal of the weekend this time in the U17 800m.
Ellen O'Dwyer also got her second bronze medal of the weekend this time in the High jump to add to her long jump bronze.
Lewis Doyle added a 200m silver to his 400m bronze of the previous day. Lewis ran a great new PB of 23.67s confirming his recent great form.
Also running the 200m was Tom McCutcheon and Tom finished 3rd in the U17 race in 24.3s.
Diarmuid Moloney U14 running his first 800m indoor race finished 5th in an excellent display in what is a very short race for this cross country star.
In one of the last races of the weekend Ailbhe O'Neill added the U18 1500m title to the 800m title she won the previous day to set herself up for a great upcoming indoor season.
So all things considered it was a good championship for the club and next weekend we move from juvenile competition to the National senior indoors in Abbottstown. Never a dull moment.
