Irish Life Health Munster Schools T&F Championships

Thanks to Sean Finn for the summery...

It doesn't matter by what yardstick you use the Munster Schools athletic championships was a highly successful one for the club and local schools. We had medals, great performances and a great sense of progress throughout all disciplines. But the most pleasing aspect was the great sense of joy and unity among all our athletic community.

The schools athletic programme is broken into four age groups Minor, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. So starting with the youngest minor age group we had Catriona Finn St Marys, Nenagh pick up the bronze medal in the Shot Putt. Also in the minor age group Micheal Moylan, Nenagh College finished 5th in a very fast 800m race.

In the Junior section we had great performances from our girls Jodie Mcgrath St Mary's Nenagh clearing 2.50m in the pole vault for the gold medal , Ellie McEvoy St Anne's Killaloe was 2nd in the high jump with a 1.50m clearence and Emma Carolan St Mary's, Newport taking the bronze in the shot putt. Ava Coady St Mary's, Nenagh had another great 100m sprint and came close with a 4th place finish. Also in fourth place was Niamh Pateman St Mary's, Nenagh in the pole vault.

The junior boys also did well and James Sage showed that he is close to getting back to his best with a comprehensive win in the 100m hurdles. Ben Connolly also did very well with a silver medal in the pole vault when clearing an excellent 3.25m. Both Tom Walshe CBS, Nenagh 800m and Tom McCutchoen St Joseph's, Borrisoleigh 200m finished within .2 of a second of a medal when both finishing 4th. Cian Hodgins CBS Nenagh returning from injury had a very solid race in the 1500m. Louis Doyle was 6th in both the 100 & 200m.

The St Joseph's Borrisoleigh relay team had a trilling win in the junior 4x100m. Alex Reynolds, James Sage and Tom McCutchoen in the first three legs handed over to Louis Doyle in 3rd and an inspired run from Louis captured the gold medal on the line.
In the Intermediate boys there was a great sense of joy when Ted Collins, Glenstal won the 800m title after a difficult time because of an 18 month growing spree. This 6'3" 16 Yr old has grown not only in height but in athletic stature as his 1m59s performance shows huge potential for the future.

His Endurance training partner Sarah Lane, St Anne's Killaloe also returning from a difficult period took another giant step forward when taking the silver medal in the 800m in 2m18s.
George O'Leary, Glenstal continues to improve with a 6th place finish in the 3000m.
Mark Carroll CBS, Nenagh cleared 6.06m in claiming the silver in the inter long jump.
Padraig Hassett, Glenstal was 4th in the 400m hurdles.

In the Senior boys our three clubmates Sean Carolan St Mary's, Newport, Joe McEvoy St Anne's, Killaloe and Darragh Miniter CBS Ennistymon all did extremely well in their events. Sean and Darragh were 1st & 2nd in the long jump with only 2cm between them 6.40m to 6.38m. Darragh was then 2nd to his other teammate Joe McEvoy in the 110m hurdles again in a very close contest. Joe also won the high jump in 1.90m and Sean was 2nd in his shot putt competition.

Last but not least was the two U16 mile races. In the boys Jamie Moloney CBS Nenagh came down in distance from his favourite 3/5k distance but showed great pace to finish 6th.

In the girls U16 Ailbhe O'Neill, St Mary's Nenagh went into the mile as slight favourite and she didn't let the pressure get to her with a dominant display eventually seeing her coming home 8sec clear in a new Munster record of 5m17s. Ailbhe may be slight of stature but is a giant of a competitor as she continues to improve and is one of the most consistent underage female Endurance athletes in the country.

So it was we left Cork with a pep in our step looking forward to the All Ireland Schools in two weeks time 1st June in Tullamore. Can hardly wait, we'll done all.

Munster U9-13, Indiv and Team with Senior Events 25th May 2019

update 27th May

It was the turn of our younger athletes this weekend with the Munster U9/11 team and individual and U12 & 13 field event championships. We had a lot of inexperienced athletes competing at this level for the first time. Our numbers were also small because of Holy Communion and Confirmations on this weekend so we could only field one relay team.

Anna Paxman at 11 yrs of age was probably our most experienced athlete in Cork and she continues to add to her growing reputation with a third place finish in the U12 High Jump competition. She can now look forward to her running events in two weeks time.

In the team event our U9 boys won the bronze medals in the 60m. Fionn Tucker, Paddy McSherry and Harry Quinn all sprinted very well and congrats to the boys.

We had no other medals in Cork but we had excellent performances from Molly Madden U9 sprint, Emily O'Neill and Sarah Long U11 600m and Oscar Griffin continues to improve with a PB in his U11 Turbo Javelin. U11 Hannah Larkin wasn't far off the medals in her long jump competition also.

Well done also to sisters Aisling (300m & Long Jump) and Soirse Ryan (600, Long Jump and Relay) competing in their first Munster event.  Mikey Ryan should be proud of his performance in the Long Jump.

We had only one relay team on the day and while out of the medals did themselves and the club proud.  Well done to our U11 team of
Soirse Ryan, Sarah Long, Emily O'Neill & Hannah Larkin.

Well done to all our Athletes!

We are still waiting on official results to be released.

update 23rd may

  • Saturday's event will be busy with ~ 1400 athletes entered to compete.  There is parking on site.
  • I've added directions to CIT's Athletic track below.
  • If no coach is available when you arrive, you can collect your numbers from the office which is to right of the stand as you look onto the track.
  • You will be charged €5 per adult on entry.
  • This is a Munster event, you should wear a club singlet.
  • Check the event flyer below for the start times of the events.  We recommend you arrive 45 mins before the start time (but events can run ahead of schedule).
  • There is a covered stand in CIT.  Temperatures look pretty good, but showers are forecast.  Stay warm & bring food.  (There is a shop on site BUT it was closed during last week's Munster schools other than that the closest shop is a 'drive away').

Update 20th may

The following athletes have been entered to compete at this weekends Munster T&F finals.  (Note: we've had a very poor response rate asking for confirmation of attendance.  This is impacting the number of relay teams we can enter.  Only two relay teams entered (Boys and Girls U11) and both are still TBC if we can actually field the teams..  If you can make time to reply by 5pm today, Monday).  We will update again later in the week.

Picture

  • Athletes who qualified from last weekends county championships will be entered into the first of the Munster competitions scheduled for the 25th May
  • We will publish this full list as soon as we can this week.

County Tipperary U/9 to U/14  "B" T&F Championships - Moyne Sun 26th May

14/5/2019

update 27th may

The County B U9/14 championships were also on this weekend in Moyne with most of our small team having their first outing for the club.

One such newcomer is Lily Marchand from Templederry. Competing in her first outdoor competition she won the U11 500m and so begins the long road to endurance glory. She can take comfort in knowing that she is taking the very same route to middle distance success as our U17 & 18 Track queens Ailbhe O'Neill & Sarah Lane who with all probability will medal in next Saturdays All Ireland schools championships. I won't unload one of my many scintillating stories on Lily just yet about what's needed and expected on the road most taken to "guaranteed" athletic success, if only. Best of luck kid welcome to the club.

Thanks to
Hazel Ryan (one of our many dedicated coaching assistants!) for the following summary:

The small group of Nenagh athletics that traveled to the county b finals in Moyne today all did very well. To name a few results Donnacha Browne came 2nd in U10 boys turbo javelin and 1st in U10 boys 300m, James Hanly took 2nd place in U9 boys long jump and a silver again in U9 boys relays. Isabelle Coyle came home with a gold medal in U11 girls relays, Dervla Ryan won a silver medal in the U10 girls Relays, Lena Ryan was delighted to her first individual medal of Silver in the girls U9 200m and a gold medal in U9 girls relays. Apologies to other Nenagh Athletics I have not mentioned here

The county B results are not up on the Tipp athletics website as I post this but I'll bring you all results during the week.  If anyone has pictures and comments to share please do so.

We traveled to Templemore for our county championships this weekend with U13/19 on Saturday and the stars of the future our U9/12 were on Sunday. We had almost 90 athletes out over the two days and every one of them competed their hearts out.

With so many athletes each in two or three events we couldn't do an indept analysis of every event so starting with our wonderful U9 girls here's a quick run through, see what I did there.

Day 1.

Results and pictures of each of the events published on our facebook page & results can be found via Tipperary Athletics facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/Tipperary-Athletics-112962225429349/?epa=SEARCH_BOX

Day 2.

Molly Madden continues where she left off from the indoors with a win in the 60m and 2nd in the 300m. Also U9 Alannah O'Carroll was 2nd in the Turbo Javelin.   Lucyanne Cleary put in a great performance to finish second in the U9 long Jump with a distance of 2.67, followed very closely by Jane O'Rourke in Third with a distance of 2.66.

Our U9 boys Paddy McSherry, Fionn Tucker and Harry Quinn had a 1,2,3 finish in the 60m.
Fionn also had a great win in the 300m while James Hanley was 4th in the Turbo Javelin.

In the U11 girls Eleanor Boland won the High Jump, Emily O'Neill was 2nd in the 600m and Hannah Larkin was 2nd in the Long Jump.

U11 boys and Oscar Griffin was 2nd in both the 60m and Turbo Javelin. Adam O'Callaghan finished 2nd in the Long Jump and Karl Ryan was 3rd in the Turbo Javelin.

U12 girls and Anna Paxman won 3 events, the 600m, High Jump and Long Jump. Her compatriot Lily Duffy was 1st in the 60m and 2nd in the 600m. Mairead O'Brien had a storming run to finish 2nd in the 60m.

U12 boys and Mike Ryan won the Long jump and finished 3rd in the 600m. Ruairi Walshe took the silver also in the 600m.

Results can also be seen via the link on Tipperary Athletics facebook page with plenty of pictures on our facebook page.

Thanks everyone for your support over the two days.  Another great turn out by the club!
