Saturday 22nd Feb (Day 1)
Day one of the Munster indoor U12 / 19 championships took place in Nenagh today and a good day was had by all. We had three winners and four bronze medallist along with a host of excellent performances given all something to look forward to in the future. Our three gold medallist all came from our endurance squad with Sarah Lane winning her first Munster title in the U19 800m race. Our track international Ailbhe O'Neill then followed up with an emphatic win in the U18 800m and soon after Cian Hodgins won the U16 1500m getting away from teammate Tom Walshe in the last two laps with Tom eventually finishing 3rd. Continuing on with the endurance theme Sean Hayes ran a fine race for 3rd in the U17 1500m and his teammate Jamie Moloney close behind in 4th. A relative novice at this level Jennifer O'Leary ran in the U14 800m and showed great maturity winning her heat and finishing 3rd overall just a second off 1st place. She is another athlete to watch out for in the future. Ellen O'Dwyer jumped 4.85m in the U16 long jump to take the bronze medal and will look forward to her high jump tomorrow, Sunday. Lewis Doyle ran for him the unfamiliar 400m and ran 56s to take the bronze medal with his teammate Pádraig Hassett close behind in 4th. We had some other excellent non medal performances from sprinters Mairéad O'Brien U13, Lilly Duffy U13 and Hannah Larkin U12 in their 60m races and Emily O'Neill in her U12 600m and are all surely stars of the future. Sunday 23rd Feb (Day 2) So Sunday and day two of the Munster indoor U12 / 19 arrived and we had a slightly smaller contingent competing. One of the first finals was in the middle distance events . We had 3 boys in the final of the U13 600m and in a very high quality race Ruairí Walshe finished 3rd after a big burn up on the final lap. Our cross country expert Kevin Finn finished 5th after winning his heat and Dylan Bergin was 8th after another good run. Dylan is a very versatile athlete and was also 8th in the 60m final. Seán Hayes ran another excellent race and took his second bronze medal of the weekend this time in the U17 800m. Ellen O'Dwyer also got her second bronze medal of the weekend this time in the High jump to add to her long jump bronze. Lewis Doyle added a 200m silver to his 400m bronze of the previous day. Lewis ran a great new PB of 23.67s confirming his recent great form. Also running the 200m was Tom McCutcheon and Tom finished 3rd in the U17 race in 24.3s. Diarmuid Moloney U14 running his first 800m indoor race finished 5th in an excellent display in what is a very short race for this cross country star. In one of the last races of the weekend Ailbhe O'Neill added the U18 1500m title to the 800m title she won the previous day to set herself up for a great upcoming indoor season. So all things considered it was a good championship for the club and next weekend we move from juvenile competition to the National senior indoors in Abbottstown. Never a dull moment. (3.00m) Junior Girls Pole Vault – Irish Schools T&F We were back in Athlone today Sunday for the All Ireland Senior League. A good start to the day is always preferable. Robbie Bennett was probably favourite for the 200m but he pulled up injured half way through so it was not to be. Joe McEvoy was competing in the unfamiliar for him Triple jump but responded well to finish 3rd with a 12.5m clearance. Darragh Miniter was equal first in the high jump. With young Ted Collins 1500m and our 4x200m relay of Paul White, Joe McEvoy, Darragh Miniter and Ted Collins posting solid results Paul White's 2nd place finish in the 400m was enough to guarantee an overall 3rd position for the team. We'll done to all involved and we wish Robbie a speedy recovery. David Sheahan moved to the road this weekend and continued his recent good form with a bronze medal finish in the County Novice Road championships in Moyne. It can be a bit of a shock to the system for pure cross country athletes but David adjusted admirably so well done from all. Nenagh CBS on a Sunday morning is usually a relatively quiet affair with an easy 60/70 min long recovery run but this Sunday was different with the CBS 5/10k race organised as a fund raiser by our own Elaine Cullinan, Caroline Hayes, Geraldine Himli and Brid Walshe. A good turnout was had and Darren Dunne led the 10k runners home in 33m 30sec. He was followed home by Sean Hayes and Luke Purcell. Cian Hodgins led the 5k runners home in 17min. He was followed home by Jamie Moloney and Ruairí Walshe. Well done to all. Almost every year a group of athletes from the club head to Glasgow's Emirates Stadium and this year was no different. James Sage, Tom McCutcheon and Lewis Doyle headed for Scotland and they did us proud with some good performances. James finished 5th in the U17 60m hurdles final. Tom was 6th in his U17 400m final but he had run a fine 53.5 sec in his heat and Tom is underage again next year. Lewis ran 24.3 in his 200m heat. So I'm going for a well earned lie down now and it's back to a much more civilised weekend with just the East Munster Schools cross country champs in Waterford on Friday 30th and the Munster Star Awards in the Tower Hotel also in Waterford on Saturday 31st. Life is not easy for any of us but what of that. We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted at something and that this thing must be attained.
Those borrowed words from Marie Curie are epic in their eloquence and simplicity. Words that can only be voiced by someone who has garnered their life's accomplishments by hard work, perseverance and self believe. Looking at our young athletes brilliant performances today in Athlone a lot of people don't realise the years of hard work and perseverance that goes into being an overnight success. Sean Carolan got our medal haul off to an early start with gold in the Shot Putt. A throw of 14.64m is an early season best. Seán was also 2nd in the Weight for distance event. Joe McEvoy had a busy day and won the 60m Hurdles in 8.2s a new PB. Joe also cleared 6.70 for 2nd in the Long jump and 1.90m for the bronze in the High jump. Darragh Miniter was also in fine form with two bronze medals. He cleared 6.55 in the long jump and had a new PB of 8.43s in the 60m Hurdles behind clubmate Joe McEvoy. Our two young pole vaulters performed very well with Jodie McGrath 4th and Ben Connolly 5th in their respective junior competitions. Both of our endurance women were in flying form with Pb's the order of the day. Sarah Lane overcame a recent injury and a slight lack of confidence in her miling ability to obliterate her previous best time with 16sec off her PB to earn the silver medal in the U20 1500m in 4.40.39 sec. Her 16yr old teammate and training partner Ailbhe O'Neill also got in on the PB act knocking two seconds off her 800m time when finishing 3rd in the U20 800m. So with less than a month into the new season and all our athletes literally hitting the ground running it threatens to be quiet a season. So get on board and strap in tight as we continue our season tomorrow in Athlone again for the final day of the National senior league. We're in 3rd position going into this and it would be nice to retain a podium position with our very young team but we're led by two very experienced performers in Robbie Bennett running the 200m and international Paul White running the 400m. My boys are so enthusiastic about their cross country they couldn't wait for the weekend to start but as luck would have it the weekend started early with the East Munster Schools cross country championships in Waterford on Friday. The Schools competition can be tough as you can find yourself running against competitors one and even two yrs older and this was the situation on Friday.
Even so we were confident enough of a team victory despite not having our schools cross country international Tom Walshe who we were resting with a slight injury. In the end despite a very good showing we had to settle for second behind De La Salle Waterford. Cian Hodgins in 4th was our first man home. He was giving away two yrs to his competitors so should be well pleased. Luke Purcell in 7th and Jamie Moloney in 9th put in great performances and Sean Moylan and Sean Hayes completed the Nenagh CBS team and we are already looking forward to the Munsters in Clarecastle next Thursday week 13th Feb as we should have a full squad out. Ben Walshe despite being only 13 has waited what seems like forever to get his chance to run in Post primary schools cross country but his day arrived on Friday and he took his chance with both hands winning the Minor boys race. He dominated from the start and raced away to win by 100m and led his team to the silver medal position much to the delight of School coach Gary Scully. Gary has an exciting few years ahead going on the talent that's going to arrive in Nenagh CBS over the next two yrs. So after two training sessions on Saturday it was back to Waterford Saturday evening for the Munster Star Awards in the Tower Hotel. Nenagh Olympic had two award winners on the night. Cian Hodgins won the Tipperary cross country athlete of the year which after the difficulties Cian had the previous year due to reaching 5'11" at just14yrs yrs of age comes as a welcome respite. Seán Carolan was our other award winner with Tipp Track and Field athlete of the year and Seán had a busy weekend with awards as the previous night he won an award from the Nenagh Guardian Sports Awards in The Abbey Court Hotel. On Sunday Ben Connolly competing in Manchester at Vault Manchester was in great form and cleared a new PB of 3.71m to continue his early season fine form. Next Saturday we are in Wicklow with our U12 boys for the national cross country relays and on Sunday some of our seniors are competing in the AAI Games in Abbottstown, Dublin. |
