EVENT DATE - Sun 05/10/14 Venue - Turnpike, Two Mile Borris Start Time - 12:00 Uploaded by Garrett Moylan, with thanks to PRO Ray Deering ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Cross Country season kicked off last Sunday with the even age championships which were held in Two Mile Borris. Nenagh athletes excelled on the day winning both individual and team medals. This will be the venue for the Munster Championships in three weeks time and it was great for the athletes to experience what awaits them then. The course itself was dry, tough and very open to the elements with no shelter at all but that didn't seem to bother our athletes as they battled a strong wind but thankfully, no rain. We had several athletes either competing for the club or in cross country for the first time and they all did very well. Girls U10 (800m) Our girls u10 were first up and all four girls performed excellently in a very fast race. Hannah Grace was our first runner home, finishing in 24th place followed by Johanna Finn 44th, Polly Sharkey46th and Christine Percy in 53rd place. The girls were placed 9th in the team standings. Boys U10 team (800m) Our lads comfortably won the team section and it was no wonder as we had four finishing in the top ten over the course. Cian Hodgins ran a super race to take the title, finishing very strongly over the last 300m to surge to the front and claim the gold medal. Tom Walsh also continued his good recent form when finishing in 3rd place and he will improve with every outing. Zac Egan also ran a stormer when finishing 5th and it's by far his best cross country run to date, while Filip Mc Intyre in finishing in 9th place also produced his best performance so far. Jack O Callaghan just finished outside the individual medals in 13th but helped the team to gold as did Ben Walsh who despite being u9, ran brilliantly for an 18th place. Well done lads. Girls U12 Unfortunately we didn't have enough bodies to make up a team in this, but the three girls who turned up did themselves proud. Ailbhe O Neill had a brilliant run to finish in 8th place and showed great potential in doing so. Emma Mulcahy finished in 15th running well in the process and Eliza Burns who was making her debut for the club had a fine run to finish in 23rd. Boys U12 More team gold and some individual medals were won in the u12 boys race with four finishers in the top ten, where five of the six lads are still u11 which bodes well for two weeks time. Alex Reynolds had one of his better run to claim the bronze medal and on this form will be a serious contender in his own age group. Luke Purcell produced an excellent run for 5th place showing great determination in the closing stages, while Joseph O'Donoghue ran his best race for the club so far finishing 8th despite being an injury doubt all week. Eoin Moloney returned to competing for the club and made a great impact finishing 10th. Aidan O'Dwyer who was making his debut in a Nenagh singlet finished in a very good 14th place and will be one to watch in the future. Oisin Pepper finished in 18th place and Daniel Fogerty was 26th as both lads contributed to a fine team win. Girls U14 Lucy Mulcahy was our sole representive in the girls u14 race and finished in a respectable 11th place. Boys U14 Josh Egan collected a bronze medal in the boys u14 race where despite being out of age he ran very well to stay in touch with the leaders and in doing so claimed 3rd place. Girls U16 Alannah Deering had a very convincing win the girls u16 race over 4000m. Up front from the start, Alannah stretched away from the field to claim her county title. In the same race Fiona Molloy produced a storming finish to claim the bronze medal. Showing a never say die attitude, Fiona stayed in touch with the 3rd placed athlete before making her decisive move in the home stretch. Girls U18 Ciara Cummins claimed another county title when winning the u18 girls race over 4000m in fine style. Never troubled from the start Ciara cruised to victory while Aoife Deering who had been in 2nd place throughout the race had to stop near the finish due to illness and this allowed those behind her to pass and she finished in 4th place. Boys U18 Killian Cullagh was a comfortable winner of the 6000m u18 race where he took control at the mid-way point and was never headed. Richard O Donoghue was in 2nd place for most of the race but was unfortunately passed near the finish but will continue to improve with every race he runs. Overall it was a great start to the Cross Country season and hopefully we'll have more of the same in Moyglass for the un-even age groups in two weeks time. Well done to all who travelled to compete and to those who came to support them. EVENT DATE - Sat 26/07/14 & Sun 27/07/14
Venue - Tullamore Start Time - Uploaded by Garrett Moylan with thanks to Competitions Secretary Vinny White, Coaches, Selectors and other team members ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The second weekend of the National Juvenile Championships brought medals for some of our athletes, there were some fine performances over the two days of competition and most of our athletes can be pleased with their efforts. Michael Quilligan, by virtue of his gold medal in the U18 400m Hurdles, has now qualified for the Irish team for the upcoming Celtic Games and all in the club congratulate him on this great achievement. Saturday We had eight athletes in action and three medals were won in fine style. Michael Quilligan led the way with a brilliant run in the u18 400m Hurdles where he won gold and was crowned long hurdles champion for a third year in row. Mikey ran well throughout and lead coming into the home straight where he had to hold off a strong finishing opponent but he did so and got the verdict from the judges to claim a richly deserved gold in 55.75. Joseph Mc Evoy won silver in the u14 Javelin where he achieved a new personal best of 34.84m in the process. Joseph put together a fine series of throws and his technique looked good throughout the event. He later competed in the High Jump but unfortunately didn't have one of his better days, finishing 9th having cleared 1.35m. Ciara Cummins ran one of her best 800m races to finish in 3rd place in the u18 section. Pitted against a strong field, Ciara ran a very clever race, staying close to the front before launching a kick which saw her hold onto a bronze medal in a time of 2.19.62. Other Nenagh athletes in action were, Leah Farnan who finished 7th in her heat of the u17 400m (1.05.27), Aoife Deering 5th in the u18 3000m (11.49.04), Alannah Deering 11th in the u15 800m (2.32.43), Jack Mc Evoy 10th in the u13 Javelin (22.45m) and Killian Cullagh 11th in the u18 3000m (9.16.88) a new personal best for him. Sunday Only four of our athletes were in action today but a silver medal and some good performances were achieved. Sean Carolan won silver in the u14 boys Discus with a medal winning throw of 32.52m. This was a fine result for Sean and a deserved reward for the work he put in over the summer. Joseph Mc Evoy was in the same event and finished in a very credible 5th place with a throw of 27.56m. Other Nenagh athletes in action on Sunday were, Ciara Cummins who had a solid run in the girls u18 1500m finishing 5th in 4.53, Alannah Deering ran 5.07.98 to finish 6th in the girls u15 1500m, a much improved run on Saturdays performance. Well done to all who got to perform at national level and did the club proud. |
