We had Indoors and Cross Country on this weekend and it was another good weekend for the club.
Our senior men were in Abbottstown on Saturday for the National Senior indoor league 1st round and we ended up in an excellent 3rd position at the end of the day. Joe McEvoy got us off to an excellent start with 2nd in the 110m hurdles and then Dan Finnerty back after a long layoff with a bad Achilles injury was looking absolutely ripped as he finished 3rd in the shot with a new PB of 10.50m. Young Ted Collins scored vital points with 6th in the 800m and Robbie Bennett is looking in top shape with a new 7.15s PB in the 60m for 2nd position. Mark Tierney got in on the PB action with a brilliant 3.30m clearance for 4th in the Pole Vault and Darragh Miniter finished off the day on a high with a jump of 6.58m in the long jump for another 7 points in the team competition. So we're in Athlone for the 2nd and final round in two weeks sitting nicely in 2nd position behind Clonliffe but in front of the other major athletic powers of Raheny and Donore Harriers. In an open competition on the day Paul White won the 400m with 49.5s for a good season indoor opener. As the saying goes and now for something completely different we had the County Senior Cross Country in Galbally on Sunday. In total contrast to Saturdays indoors conditions the county senior was run on a really tough course. Sticky muck, hills and water were the order of the day. But its horses for courses and our money was on David Sheahan who excels in these conditions. David didn't disappoint with an excellent 2nd place finish behind Dundrum's Kevin Moore who is on fire at the moment after winning a big 4 mile road race in New York over the new year. Incidentally David's brother Jim won the county seniors 30yrs ago so that in itself is a lovely unique piece of family history. Next weekend we have the Munster juvenile U9 / 19 indoor relays and the weekend after we have the All Ireland junior / U23 champs in Athlone on the Saturday and the second round of the national senior league on Sunday also in Athlone.
