EVENT DATE - Sun 15/12/13 Venue - Waterford Institute of Technology Uploaded by Garrett Moylan, based on Nenagh Guardian notes by PRO Ray Deering -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The All Ireland Uneven Cross Country Championships were held last Sunday at a very windswept Waterford Institute of Technology venue. Conditions were very tough and the course proved to be a true test of cross country running. Nenagh Olympic were represented by 10 athletes and finished the day with four medals, three team and one individual. The racing was as ever of the highest standard and there were some very good displays from our own athletes, although, as ever there were some ''what might have been'' stories but we would encourage them to focus on the positive side of getting to this level of competition. Tom Hennessy produced a great run in the boys u19 race over 6000m to finish in 8th place and claim an individual medal for his efforts. Tom was well to the fore in this fast paced race, continuing his strong running to the end, which saw him cross the line as the first Munster athlete home and he lead the province to a silver medal in the team standings. So a great days racing for Tom and two well deserved medals to show at the end.
Ciara Cummins finished in 21st place in the girls u17 race over 4000m crossing the line as the 4th Munster girl home and helping them to 3rd place in the provincial team results. Ciara was well up throughout the race and despite fading slightly towards the end can be pleased with this race. Our boys u17 team finished in 4th place in the club team results and with a bit of luck could have snatched the bronze medal. It is fair to say that a couple of the lads runs were not up to the standard that they would expect but each one of them gave their all in this high quality race. Darren Dunne was our first athlete home, crossing the line in 18th place and as the 6th member of the Munster team to finish, he claimed a provincial team gold medal for his troubles. Darren ran well in the race but we know (and he knows) that there's more to come from this talented athlete. Killian Cullagh got off to a great start and was well up the field when a back injury halted his progress and he would finish in 34th place. It was unfortunate but Killian can be very happy with his cross country season. Richard O Donoghue, who was running a year out of age, had probably his best race of the season when finishing in 50th place, showing great fight and determination throughout. Niall Mc Intyre finished in 65th place and although disappointed with the result, we know that he will bounce back for the indoor season. Cormac Dunne who has been injured for the past while, bravely finished the race and we wish him a speedy return to full fitness. In the boys u11 race we had three athletes representing us, Alex Reynolds, Rory Grace and Joseph O'Donoghue. This was the first chance that they had to experience cross country competition at this level. All three lads ran well in a race that contained 151 athletes over a 1500m course where a fast start makes all the difference and we know that they will have gained invaluable experience from this outing. Alex finished in 70th, with Rory in 87th and Joseph 131st, well done lads and we know that ye'll be doing the club proud for years to come.
